MELOW Facilitator

MELOW is pre-adjudication alternative to detention program that seeks to ensure youth return for Court appearances and do not re-offend while under supervision.

 

MELOW wraps services around the family and child through face-to-face contact and support groups.  The program is committed to family-focused programming that empowers young men to lead healthy, safe, and productive lives.

DUTIES

  • Act as a mentor to all males participating in the program either in a one-on-one or small group session.
  • Assist with bi-weekly afternoon mentoring sessions with clients.
  • Incorporate group counseling specifically developed for African American males.
  • Assist with ongoing assessment of needs for youth wherein data is collected at multiple points from intake and referrals throughout the duration of participation in the program.
  • Use approved risk assessments, screening instruments, and other evidenced-based tools to help systems shift youth to the lowest form of supervision needed to meet their needs, and in some cases, to divert youth form the system entirely.
  • Ensure participants complete approved personal self-assessments that addresses self-awareness, self-esteem, and life skills.
  • Review participant's case plans and any referrals obtained from other Court programs.
  • Work with families to determine individualized growth plan recommendations and referrals.
  • Assist in the coordination of services for youth/families assigned to program.
  • Following up with clients on days mentoring groups are not in session to include phone calls, school visits, and parent contacts.
  • Assist youth and families with identifying community resources and other ancillary services to promote youth development.
  • Assist with monitor consultant services obtained for MELOW to support the clients and families as prescribed in the contract.
  • Provide prevention education materials and activities to promote youth development.
  • Assist with Identifying and implementing strategies that build positive relations within the Court and with external stakeholders.
  • Meet with school counselor or designated person to discuss client's behaviors and/or obtain progress report.
  • Attend Court on behalf of assigned youth, if required or requested.
  • Develop weekly/monthly progress reports, program data, and daily logs.
  • Maintain files on all youth assigned.
  • Maintain progress notes on all youth assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two-years of experience in Human Services.
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge or principles and procedures of record keeping and repot preparation.
  • Ability to work in an enthusiastic and encouraging way with at risk youth.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment and strong computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with Judges, supervisors, co-worder, and other departments, social service agencies, probation department and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender racial and cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Court information and records according to law.
  • Ability to recognize drug and alcohol abuse symptoms.
  • Ability to counsel and provide guidance to individuals and respond to situation that are of a sensitive nature. 
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Must be organized, responsible and able to complete assignments in a timely manner.

RESPONSIBILITY

Incumbent performs Duties according to a flexible, customary routine with priorities determine by the Judges, Judicial Administrator, and service needs of the Court and public.
