Building Plan Examiner

Kind of Work

This work involves responsibility for the examination and review of plans and specifications of buildings and structures for compliance with the provisions of the building code and related ordinances; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering or a closely related degree.* It is desirable, but not necessary, that the applicant be a licensed architect or engineer.* For some positions course work in the area of historic preservation is desired.

Chief Building Plan Examiner

Kind of Work

Responsible supervisory and technical work in the examination of construction plans of new buildings or alterations of existing structures for compliance with building regulations; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a closely related field.*

AND EITHER:

Five (5) years of experience as a Building, Electrical or Mechanical Plan Examiner with the City of New Orleans.

OR:  

Five (5) years of full-time professional experience reviewing and/or creating building construction plans for compliance with building regulations either as an architect, engineer, or building plan examiner.

Building Inspector

Kind of Work

Beginning level work inspecting building construction and repair to secure compliance with municipal regulations, and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A High School Diploma or GED issued by a state Department of Education.*

EITHER: Two (2) years (60 semester hours) of university or trade school training in an architecture, engineering, or construction technology curriculum from an accredited college or university* and one (1) year of full-time experience in architecture or building construction involving inspection, drafting, designing or building. Additional experience may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.

OR:  A Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering, historic preservation, or construction technology from an accredited college or university.*

OR: A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university* and an active certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Building Inspector.*

Code Enforcer Inspector I

Kind of Work

Beginning level work inspecting dwellings to secure compliance with laws, ordinances, and regulations governing minimum housing standards; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School graduation or G.E.D. Equivalency Diploma.*

AND EITHER:  Two (2) years of full-time experience in residential, commercial, or industrial wiring.  Experience is subject to verification.

OR:   Active certification by the International Code Council as an Electrical Commercial/Residential Inspector.*

Mechanical Equipment Inspector

Kind of Work

Beginning level inspectional and law enforcement work in maintaining legal requirements and safety standards relating to mechanical equipment; and related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid driver's license.*

AND EITHER: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited or university.*  

OR:   Two (2) years of full-time experience in the installation and maintenance of boilers, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, gas equipment, elevators or other mechanical equipment.

Some positions may require employees to use their own automobiles.  Employees who are required to use their automobiles will be paid a car allowance.
